Welcome

From environmental responsibility to environmental management

Welcome to Lesson 08 of Component 12. This lesson builds on environmental legislation by looking at how organisations can manage their environmental responsibilities in a structured way.

You will focus on ISO 14001, an internationally agreed standard for environmental management systems, and compare different waste-disposal methods.

Big Question

Should organisations be required to follow ISO 14001, or should environmental certification remain voluntary?

02

Learning Outcomes

What should you know by the end?

Describe the aims of ISO 14001.
Explain the benefits of ISO 14001 to organisations and the environment.
Discuss possible drawbacks or consequences of adopting ISO 14001.
Compare landfill, reuse, recycling and controlled-waste disposal.
Explain why some organisations may be reluctant to adopt environmental management systems.
03

Prior Knowledge Check

Quick recap from Lesson 07

1. What is ISO 14001 mainly concerned with?
2. Which is a benefit of recycling?
3. Why is controlled waste managed carefully?
04

Why This Matters

Environmental performance is now an engineering issue

Environmental management can affect operating cost, reputation, customer confidence, resource use and long-term business performance.

ISO 14001 gives organisations a framework to improve environmental performance, meet compliance obligations and work towards environmental objectives.

Engineering Question

If certification costs money and takes time, why might an engineering company still choose to adopt ISO 14001?

05

Main Learning Content

ISO 14001 and waste-disposal methods

ISO 14001

ISO 14001 is an internationally agreed standard that sets requirements for an environmental management system.

Its aim is to help organisations:

  • enhance environmental performance
  • fulfil compliance obligations
  • achieve environmental objectives

Benefits of ISO 14001

More efficient use of resources.
Reduction of waste.
Potential reduction in costs.
Competitive advantage.
Greater trust from stakeholders.

Possible Drawbacks

Organisations may be reluctant to adopt ISO 14001 because implementation can require time, staff effort, new procedures, monitoring, training, documentation and certification costs.

Methods of Waste Disposal

Landfill: often cheaper, but can create long-term pollution and land-use problems.
Reuse: reduces single-use items and waste, although reused products may sometimes be lower quality.
Recycling: reduces landfill and may use less energy than producing new materials, but can be expensive and not all waste is recyclable.
Controlled waste disposal: reduces harmful waste entering landfill but requires regulated handling and licensed disposal.

Zero-Waste Thinking

A zero-waste approach aims to conserve natural resources, reduce pollution and keep products and materials in use for longer.

Engineering Case Study

Should ISO 14001 be compulsory?

Engineering Company Scenario

A medium-sized manufacturing company is considering ISO 14001 certification. Management agrees that environmental performance should improve, but some managers are concerned about cost, administration and staff time.

Discuss

  • What benefits could ISO 14001 bring?
  • What practical drawbacks might the company face?
  • Could certification improve customer or stakeholder confidence?
  • Would making ISO 14001 compulsory be realistic for every organisation?
Exam-style thinking

Strong evaluation considers both advantages and disadvantages before reaching a justified conclusion.

08

Class Activity

Compare waste-disposal options

Waste-Management Decision

An engineering company produces metal off-cuts, packaging, used batteries and electronic waste.

Check examiner-style mark guidance

Indicative points:

  • Identifies reuse or recycling for suitable materials.
  • Recognises that hazardous or controlled waste requires regulated handling.
  • Explains benefits of reducing landfill.
  • Considers cost or practical limitations of recycling.
  • Links method choice to the type of waste.
  • Provides a justified overall recommendation.

For a higher-level answer: compare alternatives directly and explain why one option is more suitable than another for a particular waste stream.

Lesson Summary

Key environmental-management ideas

ISO 14001

A framework for an environmental management system.

Benefits

Better resource efficiency, less waste, potential cost savings, competitive advantage and stakeholder trust.

Waste Choices

Landfill, reuse, recycling and controlled disposal each have advantages and limitations.

Engineering Judgement

Environmental decisions should balance compliance, sustainability, cost and practical feasibility.
